Already have a domain from GoDaddy, 123 Reg, IONOS or anyone else? You can put your Portfolio and client portals on it for free. Buildscout shows you exactly what to change where you bought it, then does the rest.
Add your domain
Click Portfolio in the sidebar, then the Domain tab, or go to Settings → Domain.
Click Use a domain I already have.
Under What's your domain?, type it, like yourbusiness.co.uk. It works with or without the www.
Click Continue.
The page now shows your domain and the steps to go live.
Point your domain at Buildscout
Step 2, Point your domain at Buildscout, lists the record or records to add where your domain is managed, in a table with Type, Name and Value. Click a name or value to copy it. If we can tell who runs your domain's DNS, the steps name them and say where to find the settings.
Sign in where you bought your domain.
Find your domain's DNS settings. They're sometimes called "DNS management", "Zone editor" or "Advanced DNS".
Delete any record already named the same as the ones in the table (an A, CNAME or forwarding record).
Add the records from the table. "@" means your domain itself; some providers leave the name empty for it.
Save.
Back in Buildscout, click I've added it: check now.
We also check by ourselves every few seconds while the page is open. A change can take up to an hour to show. Each record says Seen once we can see it, and Not yet until then.
Make it secure
Step 3, Make it secure (https), happens by itself once your domain points at us. It usually takes a few minutes. When it's done, the page says your domain is live, with Open it to see it.
Put your Portfolio on it
Step 4, Your Portfolio on it, shows your Portfolio at your domain once it's published. If it's still a draft, click Publish your page. If you haven't set up your Portfolio yet, click Set up your Portfolio. Your client portal links use your domain either way.
Choose your main address
Under Your main address, pick your domain with or without "www". Anyone who types the other one is sent to it, so both work.
Why does it say my provider can't point the address without www?
Some providers can't point your bare domain, like yourbusiness.co.uk, at another site. Then it won't open your page. Click Use the www address to make that your main address, then turn on forwarding at your provider from the bare domain to the www one, as the steps say.
Why is my domain still setting up?
Usually the DNS change hasn't shown yet. Check you added the records exactly as shown, then click I've added it: check now. A change can take up to an hour. The steps tick off as each part is done.
Why does it say "Needs attention"?
The domain stopped working. Remove the domain at the bottom with Remove this domain and add it again, or get in touch and we'll help.
Why can't I add my domain?
That doesn't look like a domain.: check what you typed, like smithbuilders.co.uk.
You already have a domain. Remove it first.: a team has one domain. Remove the old one at the bottom of the page first.
What happens if I remove it?
Click Remove this domain, then Remove. Your page comes off your domain and your Buildscout address keeps working.
