Filters narrow Planning data down to the applications that fit your work. They're on the left of the page, under your search area. The results, the map and the count follow every change straight away.
Pick the work
Click Planning data in the sidebar.
If the page opens on What work are you after? with a box to write in, click I'll pick them myself to see the filters.
Under What work are you after?, click the jobs you do, such as extensions or loft conversions. You'll see applications whose proposal mentions one of them.
For work that isn't listed, type a word the proposal would use under Something else? and pick it.
The words you've picked sit together below. An application needs to mention just one of them. Click a word to make it a must: then an application has to mention every "must contain" word.
Decision and date
Decision: click Approved, Rejected, Undecided, Withdrawn or Other. Pick none to see them all, decided or not.
Date: choose Submitted or Decided, then Any time, Last 30 days, Last 90 days or Last year. Or choose your own dates under Or pick the dates. Planning data goes back to January 1980.
The date and the decision are also above the results, for a quick change.
More filters
Each of these is a card. Click a card to open it and set it.
Words to leave out: skips any application whose proposal mentions one of them, such as demolition.
Words in the documents: finds applications whose drawings and reports mention something the proposal doesn't, like steel beams. Click a word to switch it between could and must contain. With two or more words, choose Any matching document or Only if the job type matches too. You can also leave out applications whose documents mention a word, such as asbestos.
Planning agents and Company owners: see How to find planning agents and company owners.
Application type: only applications of the types you pick, such as householder applications.
Proposed use: what the building will be used for, by use class.
Property value: what the property is worth today, so you only see jobs on homes in your market.
Number of homes: how many homes the scheme would build.
EPC rating: the property's energy rating. The lowest ratings are where retrofit work is.
Materials: what the build uses, from its documents.
Planning reference: see How to look up one application by its reference.
See and clear your filters
Hover over Filters at the top of the panel to see every filter you've set, with what it's set to. Click the cross beside one to take it off.
Undo puts back the change you just made, and Redo makes it again.
Clear all takes every filter off. Your search area stays as it is.
Once your filters are right, save the search to run it again later. See How to save and reuse searches.
Why there's no "last 7 days"
Councils publish an application a median of about 10 days after it's submitted. A search of the last week, by submitted date, would show only a small part of what it will, and look like missing data. So the shortest quick period is Last 30 days. You can still pick your own dates under Or pick the dates.
For the same reason, the newest applications keep arriving for a few weeks after their submitted date.
Why the Property value filter hides some applications
Not every application has a property value. When you set Property value, applications without one are left out. To see them again, clear the Property value card.
Why some filters aren't there
Planning agents and Company owners need Enterprise. On another plan their cards say so, and searching by them is switched off. In Australia, Company owners, Application type, Proposed use, Property value, Number of homes and EPC rating aren't in the planning data, so their cards aren't shown.
Why a filter says what's wrong with it
Number of homes has to be a whole number, and Property value an amount in numbers, neither of them negative. If what you typed can't be read, the field tells you why, and the search carries on without that limit until you fix it.
